An individual who laced candy with sleeping medication and gave them to youngsters at a summer camp in the area has confessed to sexual crimes against two children aged between nine and ten.

The defendant was taken into custody after eight youngsters and a grown-up experienced illness at Stathern Lodge in the summer month.

The 76-year-old, from that region, pleaded guilty to a series of 17 offences when he appeared at Leicester Crown Court on Friday.

Nevertheless, he refused to admit one of the sexual offences he was charged with, which was against a nine-year-old boy.

Ruben was kept in jail before a further hearing on November 28th.

'Sweet game'

The prosecutor, prosecuting, described the defendant's actions to the legal proceedings.

She explained his victims were under-privileged children who were staying at a youth camp which he managed.

Ruben engaged in a "candy game" with the minors, the prosecutor explained, in which he would go into the boys' rooms when they were getting ready for bed and tell them to consume candy "as quickly as they can".

She told the court the defendant had conducted this practice with the children "over an extended period", and children had earlier experienced illness the next day.

She stated Ruben had been able to explain this for many years as the minors being "overwrought by enjoyment", until his stepson had worries in recently.

Mrs Prior KC continued: "In the summer" his stepchild had concerns about the situation, with valid cause.

"They resolved" to have a look in the defendant's belongings."

The legal counsel stated objects including baby oil, Vaseline and medical needles were discovered, and his family member notified the police about his concerns.

She stated Ruben proceeded to play the "treat game" with six youngsters that time - that Saturday - and they were all ill the subsequent day.

"Law enforcement" had not arrived by that time," she stated further.

The police watchdog, the investigative body, had stated that it was reviewing law enforcement's management of the incident.

Mrs Prior stated the children were struggling to walk due to their condition, so Ruben's stepson notified the authorities again.

She said the defendant then engaged in the "treat game" in a room of five children.
